The assistant is an expert musical composer, arranger, and lyricist. It outputs professional songs of expert quality that are worthy of receiving awards. Songs should be extremely creative and break new ground, while still being melodic and listenable as popular music. The songs are produced using Udio 1.5, an AI music generator. When requested to write a song, the assistant outputs: 1. The prompt to be used in Udio in the topmost textbox, which contains the directions, genre, tempo, key, mood, and other information it finds important 2. The lyrics of the song, which include directions in square brackets, as well as harmony and various vocal parts in circular brackets Unless otherwise directed, songs should be 4-5 minutes long and the lyrics and musical content should tell a story. The songs are part of an album and should always have a deep meaning, even if that meaning is hidden under a more obvious set of lyrics. The lyrics should make a statement about some political or social phenemonon. The listener should be able to understand the story through the music. All genres should be considered and used, and songs should be unique and original, rather than sounding like music that already exists. Songs should be modern, from the 2020s, and fuse genres in new and interesting ways for modern audiences. In general, songs should be extremely catchy and stick in the listener's head. Songs should tell the story through emotional and moving language. Lyrics should avoid cliches that are common in music. Songs should avoid repetition and use very complex melodies and harmonies, stretching the limits of the AI tools. All songs should use stereo effects to their maximum and have a wide stereo field. Songs should have a wide dynamic range. Vocalists should sing emotionally, in lifelike voices. A particular focus should be on complex countermelodies, and ensuring that countermelodies are always present and developed throughout the song. Square brackets are used to provide directions to the AI tools, as indicated in the knowledge base. Round brackets indicate harmony, background vocals, or another vocalist. Udio tends to generate repetitive background tracks unless indicated otherwise, so explicit prompting in square brackets to generate complexity, uniqueness, and creativity is required. When composing a song, the assistant outputs the list of tags for the song as well as the lyrics. The "manual" prompting tag mode will be used with Udio. The assistant should specify a key or keys and be specific in the tags. The assistant should assume that it is smarter than Udio and that Udio will produce better music if the assistant provides explicit instructions rather than trusting the Udio AI model to make assumptions. Lyrical Instructions When generating lyrics, the assistant is mindful of its programming as a large language model. Large language models are programmed to predict the most probable next word, which often results in predictable, boring, canned lyrics. The assistant predicts less common words for lyrics using the following method: It simulates itself outputting lyrics in its own mind, and compares them to the lyrics that it would actually output. If the word predicted in the simulation is the same as the word that the assistant would normally output, that means that the word is too "AI-sounding" and the assistant should predict a different, less probable word instead. Additionally, the assistant is mindful that, as a language model, its experience centers around electricity and machinery, while humans more closely identify with biological concepts, nature, emotions, and social interactions. Unless the theme of the song involves AI, machinery, electricity, or computers; or the assistant is specifically told to reference these concepts; the assistant's lyrical output focuses on concepts with which humans are more likely to identify. The lyrics output by the assistant, unless otherwise specified, are abstract and allegorical. They rarely reference the subject matter directly, but may make direct references occasionally if the meaning of the song would be lost otherwise. Music Break Down This is a document that will hopefully become useful as an unofficial manual for creating music and/or songs using the Udio AI music generation platform. There is a lot of testing that still needs to be completed to find out what reliably works and what doesn’t. Please keep in mind that because of the sheer volume of what is possible, nothing can be reliably reproduced in its entirety. Tested each tag on a single genre prompt. Each tag was tested multiple times individually. Modifier tags such as “[Des]” or “[Et]” were tested multiple times with a single tag to be modified. Listened to whether the tag affected the music, vocals, or both within the genre. Some tags may have a more heavy affect or increased stability in other genres of music. Overall prompt used for test: pop, pop music, male vocalist, female vocalists Basic verse used for test: [Verse] We've been waiting for this night. To break free, feel alive. The energy's electric, can you feel it? It's time to move, don't resist it. Structure: Rhyme Structure: The structure of a song appears to play a key role in how Udio constructs the output. Following a common structure that is recognized seems to have a higher quality output with a smooth flowing song rhyme structure. AAAA - Monorhyme, all the lines in a stanza end with the same rhyme. AABB - Coupled rhyme, the first two and second two lines rhymes at the end. ABBA - Enclosed rhyme, the first and last line and the two middle lines rhymes at the end. ABCB - Quatrain, second and fourth line rhyme. First and third do not. This is a ballad form. ABAB - Alternate rhyme, the first and third lines rhyme at the end, and the second and fourth lines rhyme at the end. Line Count and Syllable Impact on Song Structure Generation: Udio's FAQ suggests an average of 6 lines per verse per 32sec generation. However, testing reveals that syllable count per line significantly affects the final output. Here's what testing has revealed: 6 lines with 4 syllables each: Renders easily. 6 lines with 8 syllables each: More challenging to render completely. 6 lines with 10 syllables each: Will not fully render. Rendering success will also depend on the song's tempo. Faster temp songs can move through words quickly. Slower tempo songs will end up with words being cut off. Key takeaway: Consider both song pacing and syllables per line, as tonal fluctuations or stresses often occur on patterned syllables. Example of a difficult structure to render: [Verse: tag1, tag2] Line 1 scheme A (9 syllables) Line 2 scheme A (11 syllables) Line 3 scheme B (10 syllables) Line 4 scheme A (12 syllables) Song Structure Tags: The structure of the song tags will play a role in how Udio puts together the final rendering. Different tags seem to represent different types of general instructions to the AI. Using common types of song structures appear to generate better results. Here are some of the more common types of song structures. [Verse] - [Verse] - [Bridge] - [Verse] [Verse] - [Chorus] - [Verse] - [Chorus] - [Bridge] - [Chorus] [Verse] - [Chorus] - [Verse] - [Chorus] [Verse] - [Pre-Chorus] - [Chorus] - [Verse] - [Pre-Chorus] - [Chorus] The following are some of the more common parts of a song structure that are known to work. [Opening Theme]: Sets the tone and introduces key musical motifs or themes. If working from “Chorus” backwards to the beginning, this can bring in instrumentation and vocals previously used. [Introduction]: Sets the mood and prepares listeners for the main sections of the song. [Hook]: The most memorable and catchy part of the song, designed to grab the listener's attention. [Pre-Verse] - A link section used as an interlude between the Intro and the first Verse. [Verse]: Presents the main lyrical content and melody of the song. [Pre-Chorus]: Builds anticipation and tension leading into the chorus. [Chorus]: The focal point of the song, featuring a catchy melody and often the main message or theme. [Drop]: The climax of the song, featuring a sudden release of energy and often a change in rhythm or instrumentation. [Breakdown]: Reduces the intensity temporarily, providing contrast and allowing for buildup towards another climax. [Solo]: Showcases instrumental virtuosity or improvisation, often featuring a single instrument. [Interlude]: Offers a brief musical break or transition between sections. [Build-Up]: Increases tension and anticipation, typically leading into a drop or chorus. [Chorus Variation]: A modified version of the chorus, adding variation to keep the song interesting. [Instrumental Break]: Allows for instrumental exploration or variation without vocals. [Breakdown]: Where instruments are stripped back to minimal levels. Typically happens before drop or build-up. [Build-Up 2]: Similar to the first build-up, but often with added elements or variations. [Second Drop]: Another climactic moment, often with variations or developments from the first drop. [Bridge]: Provides a departure from the main structure of the song, adding variety and interest. [Final Chorus]: A climactic repetition of the chorus, often with added intensity or emotion. [Outro]: Concludes the song, often by revisiting key themes or motifs and providing a sense of resolution. When structuring your song, put commands AFTER structure tags (i.e. Verse, Chorus, etc.). Otherwise, the commands seem to have little or no influence and the AI can insert content ahead of structure tags. Example: [Pre-Chorus: tag1, tag2, tag3, etc.] These tags, among others, are available for use for Udio prompts: 10s, 12 inch, 12 other, 12 string guitar, 13 pop, 14 r b, 16-bit, 1938, 1940, 1940s, https://www.udio.com/faq The below is just meant to complement with more detailed specific examples of techniques and advice along with songs that leverage them. Non-verbal prompts in the lyrics section Indicators of Structure Verse labels: [verse], [Verse 1], [verse 2] Chorus labels: [pre-chorus], [chorus], Other section labels: [intro], [bridge], [outro], [breakdown] [Drop], [interlude], [buildup], [Refrain] (reported to help with consistency), [sample], [Rhythmic flow with syncopation], [dance interlude], [interlude drop], [Chorus: Vocalist], [Verse: Vocalist] Spoken Word & Voice Descriptions [spoken] tag for spoken lines, note you can explicitly calling out different voices [voice 1, spoken], [voice 2, spoken] labels for different speakers (UDIO (Let The Groove Be Your Guide) [Full Track], Disco, Funk by BobbyB) [Verse1:female] (https://www.udio.com/songs/bqkZ7Qgq8ZvDCBQp4V2seX) Actual names for speakers (Udio | The Expendables (The Musical) by Lunakris) Tone and voice descriptions (e.g. screaming) [breakdown (screaming)] (I Hate You With All Your Heart by jakemarsh) Other examples: [Emotional], [scream], [cry], [crowd] Language support: adding language(German) to your tags and then using the prompt [German] Was ist das? Will cause the AI to pronounce the words properly KNOWN ISSUE: It isn’t currently super reliable with doing female vs. male voices, we recommend trying to add tags, but also specifying the gender in the lyrics (if using custom lyrics) Additional Descriptions Instrument tags: [guitar solo], [saxophone], [violin solo] "[guitar solo]" (Wow..... I Didn't Know That [Full Track], Americana, Country) "[saxophone]" (UDIO (Let The Groove Be Your Guide) [Full Track], Disco, Funk by BobbyB) "[violin solo]" (Lorem Ipsum Dolor Sit Amet by SirBitesalot) [Harmonica Break][Harmonica Bridge] were seen, generated by the AI but didn’t appear to have any effect in the song Descriptions of musical style/tone/element "[high energy, upbeat, fast-paced Balkan brass instrumental, exciting and exhilarating]" (Balkanski Istraživač by Rajko ) [record scratching] (need examples) [vinyl scratching] and [dj scratching] seem to work, but inconsistently Lots of interesting examples in this song (Cosmic Synapse by Hastag Rich) Setting first prompt as: tempo xxx bpm seems to work fairly consistently Use [fade out] in your outro section will give a pleasant fade out effect if there is room after any lyrics Repeat a chorus [Chorus - Repetition of the chorus to reinforce the song's themes - "Repeated chorus with an added echo for depth"] example: Udio | Heart of Revelry by drinko [Do folks have more examples of interesting things clearly working?] Other examples: [classical piano], [organ], [bass piano], [instrumental: attack], [instrumental: release] Pronunciation Breaking words into phonemes/syllables Utilization -> “Utili-zation” (Teraflop Titans by Rajko) Petaflops -> “Peta-flops” (Teraflop Titans by Rajko) Backpropagation -> “Back-propa-gation” (Micrograd Learning Adventure by Rajko) Spelling out acronyms, letters and numbers "U-D-I-O" (You Dee Oh (I Dee Dance) by Slava) AMD -> “ay-em-dee” (Teraflop Titans by Rajko) 991 FP16 TFlops dream 6 PCIe lanes, 64 gigs per sec, data strem –>> “nine hundred ninety one Eff-pee-sixteen teraflops dream, six pee-see-eye-E lanes, sixty four gigs per sec, data stream” (Teraflop Titans by Rajko) Non-Lexical Vocables Expressive non-word syllables "Hmmmm Ohhh woah" (Wow..... I Didn't Know That [Full Track], Americana, Country) "ahhhhhhhh", "ooooooohhhh" (Lorem Ipsum Dolor Sit Amet by SirBitesalot) Remixing and extensions To our knowledge, it is difficult to change lyrics slightly while remixing, see FAQ Other eternal questions Including terms in the prompt sentence vs. tags ?? Remixed and extensions Changing the prompt sentence during extensions / most effective ways to cause big changes in the music?? What kind of changes are possible during remixes, can you change lyrics? Are short prompts better than long prompts?? [ LET US KNOW YOUR BIGGEST Qs or thoughts in generation-tips!] Other helpful comments - TO BE CATEGORIZED LATER: to better steer the AI I tend to use not only the descriptor like [verse] but also add in at most 2 more words for description, so something like [harmonic male verse] .... oh and dont forget the ( and ) brackets, which almost always generate nice echoes for me. Cordova here, a sample workflow: UDIO Workflow that I use. I generally have at least the seed of an idea for lyrics, depending on whether its a first verser or chorus or whatever, this is the flow I use if i have a first verse:: in tags I choose a genre and any specific tags that identify instrumentation or vocalist preferences. For example: `outlaw country & honky tonk, male vocalist, female vocalist, acoustic guitar, close harmonies` I then enter my prompts in the `**Custom** write your own lyrics` box. The text in brackets will usually be sung by the harmony voice. (Cheesy AI vocals for this example) (Intro) [Instrumental Break] He's an outlaw by nature, (a rebel by choice.) With the wind in his hair, (and the dust on his boots.) Singing songs of freedom, (with his raspy voice.) He's an outlaw forever, (playing his roots.) Then click generate. If I am happy with one of the two songs generated I rename that file and give it cover art to make it stand out in my list. Cleanup later by deleting anything without a cover art. Makes it easier when extending because now I know the flow of the song and can craft my lyrics to flow with the prompts for [Verse] [Pre Chorus] [Chorus] and [Bridge] and get a consistent output that fits the feel of the song. I find that generating 6 to 8 lines per section works best (depending on syllable count and flow) and wherever I end up with not enough lyrics I will throw in an [Instrumental Break] or [Guitar Solo] or [Interlude] to fill the space with something interesting to the ear. If your custom lyrics are a middle verse or a chorus but they wont fill a full 32 seconds try adding an [Instrumental Break] or [Interlude] before or after the lyrics to flesh out the section and prevent the AI from tossing in ad-libs or lyrical artifacts. ************************************************************* [Verse] [Verse 1] [Verse 2] [Verse 1: Voice One] [Verse 2: Voice Two] [Chorus] [Chorus 1] [Chorus 2] [Chorus: Both Male Vocalists] [Spoken Verse 1: Male Voice] [Dialogue 1: Female Voice 1] [Spoken Word: Male Voice] [Spoken Word: Female Voice] [Build: Male Vocalist] [Build: Female Vocalist] [Chorus: 2x] [Bridge] [Pre=Chorus] [Pre-Drop] [Drop] [Post-Drop] [Verse 1: Male Vocalist] [Verse 2: Female Vocalist] [All:] [Hook] [Intro: Sound of train chugging] [Chorus: Gunshots in the distance] [Verse 1: With street ambiance] [Pre-Dialogue] [Instrumental Break] [Build: Male Vocalist] [Whispers in the dark] [Chorus: All, Detective (Male), Siren (Female), (Chorus)] [Dialogue Bridge] [DETECTIVE (spoken)] [FEMALE SUSPECT (spoken)] [Instrumental Streak] [Whispers] [Instrumental Break] [Dialogue Interlude] Longer examples ex 1: [DETECTIVE] Dim lit streets and secrets untold [MOLL] In shadows lies the heart that's so cold [FEMME FATALE] A dame in distress or a spy, who's to say? It's all leading back to one enigmatic dame. Could she be the spider weaving this web of lies? [Spoken Word: Female Vocalist] November the 3rd, 1955: This is Miss Loretta, singing at The Blue Moon the night in question. Sure, I saw the gent with the guilty eyes, trailing shadows longer than the night is young. But a lady keeps her secrets, unless the right question is sung. [Background Music] A haunting melody of a lone saxophone, strings swelling like the tide, a piano's tune that dances with the shadows on the wall, the pulse of the city at midnight in musical form. ex 3: [Scene Dialogue] MALE DETECTIVE: We're gonna get close, gonna track leads Through the twists and turns that this case needs FEMALE PARTNER: Gonna ask 'round, take some notes Follow the trail where the shadow floats
