Halifax is the largest city in Nova Scotia and is renowned for its culture and history. The Halifax Regional Municipality, which is about twice as large as Centre County, has a population twice as high, around 340,000. You'll be driven to the downtown core of Halifax, where you'll set off on foot to see of the some of the city's most significant sites:
Halifax Public Gardens
Similar to New York Central Park, this planned parkland is an oasis in the middle of the city. Should you choose to stroll through, you can tour gravel paths alongside lakes, wildflowers, and historic sites.
Halifax Citadel National Historic Site
Situated at a high point in the city, the Citadel offers stunning views of the surrounding region. You may also choose to go inside, where you will be able to view a 19th century fortress that protected the city hundreds of years ago.
Maritime Museum of the Atlantic
This collection contains one of the largest sets of maritime items in the world. Artifacts range from military to civilian and include buyos, anchors, armaments, parts of sunken ships, and more. A featured display contains artifacts from the Titanic. Also available are reminders of the Halifax explosion that occurred on December 6, 1917, which killed 2000, destroyed all buildings within 16 miles, and was the largest man-made explosion prior to the development of nuclear weapons.
Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21
The largest immigration site in Canada during the 19th century, this museum is sometimes referred to as Canada's "Ellis Island." The museum describes the stories of immigrants who came to Canada and the hardships they faced in a new country.
Harbor
Halifax contains a waterfront nearly one mile long lined by docks and ships. Near the waterfront are restaurants and shops perfect for you to take home a souvenier of the area or grab something to eat. We recommend that you end your day in this area, where we can eat dinner together and stroll the docks at sunset.
